Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a psychologist cost in Sydney?

The Australian Psychological Society (APS) recommended fee for a standard 50-minute psychology session is $318 for the 2025-2026 financial year. This is a suggested benchmark, not a mandatory price, and actual fees can vary depending on the psychologist’s experience, specialisation (such as a Clinical Psychologist), location, and the type of service provided.

At HealthSync Care we provide tailored assessment and ongoing therapy options. Our assessment packages are all inclusive and include a comprehensive report and paediatrician consultation. Our ongoing therapy pricing is currently set in line with NDIS pricing standards.

Are psychologists covered by Medicare in Australia?

Some mental health services are subsidised by Medicare through the Better Access initiative. This gives people access to 10 individual and 10 group sessions per calendar year. To access these rebates, the individual will need a referral from their GP, as well as a Mental Health Treatment Plan. There is usually also an out-of-pocket expense associated when accessing these services. Rebates can vary depending on the type of psychologist seen and services rendered and are usually around $98.97.

It is best to speak to a GP to determine eligibility for the Better Access initiative.

How can a psychologist support children?

Psychologists can support children in a number of ways depending on their needs and preferences. Older children may sit and chat, as you would in a session for adults, while younger children may be better served by engaging in play therapy sessions that enable the psychologist to observe and interact in a low-pressure environment. Depending on needs, therapists might also involve parents in sessions to provide support and guidance.

Through therapy, children often experience enhanced emotional regulation, better social skills, and increased self-esteem. Therapy also provides tools to manage stress and navigate life’s challenges more effectively.

Some ways psychologists can support children include:
1. Assessment and Diagnosis: Conducting comprehensive assessments and supporting in the diagnosis of disabilities such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), ADHD, learning disabilities, or intellectual disabilities.

2. Individualised Therapy: Providing evidence-based interventions like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), play therapy, or social skills awareness. Psychologists can also help the child develop coping strategies for challenges such as anxiety, sensory sensitivities, or social difficulties.

3. Collaboration with Families and Schools: Working closely with parents and caregivers to provide guidance on supporting development and behaviour in the home. They can also collaborate with teachers and school staff to create supportive learning environments and implement accommodations or modifications.

Should I send my child to a psychologist?

There are several reasons you might seek out a psychologist to support your child including concerns regarding their development, emotional or behavioural changes, difficulties with social interaction  or if they have experienced a significant life event. On some occasions other professionals such as day care educators and medical specialists may prompt you to seek out a psychologist.

If you’re unsure, it’s always okay to ask your paediatrician, GP or educator for advice. They can often help you decide if a psychologist might be beneficial.

You do not need a referral from the GP to access a psychologist though seeking GP advice can support with obtaining medicare rebates.
