What is a Paediatrician?
A paediatrician is a specialist medical doctor who has taken additional training in the health of children, infants, and young people. They commonly see children from birth to adolescence. Paediatricians assess, diagnose, and manage a wide range of medical and developmental concerns, including common childhood illnesses, minor injuries, routine health check-ups, and developmental or behavioural concerns.
What is the role of the Paediatrician?
A paediatrician provides medical care that supports the growth, development, and health of infants, children, and adolescents.
Their role may include:
- Monitoring growth and development
- Preventative care, including routine health check-ups, and guidance on nutrition, sleep, and safety
- Diagnosing and managing short-term and long-term medical conditions
- Supporting the management of behavioural and emotional concerns
- Providing advice to parents and caregivers about their child’s health and development
Paediatricians work with families to support a child’s overall health through their developmental stages.
What can a Paediatrician help with?
Paediatricians are trained in the medical, developmental and behavioural health of children and adolescents.
They can assist with:
- General health and development
- Chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, eczema, epilepsy, and allergies
- Behavioural and emotional concerns
- Medical care following injuries or accidents
- Puberty and adolescent health
- Feeding, sleep and growth concerns
Paediatricians work collaboratively with families and other health professionals to support a child’s health and wellbeing.
Why would a child be referred to a Paediatrician?
A child may be referred to a paediatrician by a general practitioner (GP) for further assessment, specialist input, or ongoing management. Common reasons why a child may be referred to a paediatrician include:
- Concerns about a child’s growth or development
- Chronic or recurring medical conditions
- Feeding, nutritional or digestive issues where a child is struggling with feeding, poor weight gain, and/or food allergies
- Behavioural or emotional concerns affecting home or school
- Unexplained symptoms such as frequent fevers, fatigue, pain, or abnormal test results that require further analysis
- Assessment of neurodevelopmental differences Autism, ADHD, and cognitive challenges
What’s the difference between a Paediatrician and a doctor?
A paediatrician is a type of medical doctor who has completed additional training to specialise in the care of infants, children, and adolescents.
A General Practitioner (GPs) provides healthcare for people of all ages, while paediatricians focus specifically on children’s medical, developmental, and behavioural health needs.
Can a Paediatrician diagnose ADHD?
Paediatricians are trained to assess, diagnose, and manage a range of neurodevelopmental conditions including ADHD and Autism, when clinically appropriate.
At HealthSync Care, our paediatricians work closely with our psychology team to ensure a thorough and evidence-based assessment process. This may include:
- Initial assessment: Child’s medical history, developmental milestones, academic performance, and behaviour at home and school.
- Observation and screening: Standardised questionnaires or screening tools may be used to better understand areas such as attention, impulsivity, and behaviour.
- Ruling out other causes: Look at learning difficulties, anxiety, sleep concerns, medical conditions, or environmental influences to ensure symptoms are not explained by another underlying issue.
- Diagnosis and management: If a diagnosis is warranted, the paediatrician will explain the findings and develop an individual plan which may include behavioural strategies, school adjustments, therapy options, and when appropriate medication.
