Cognitive Assessments at HealthSync Care

Cognitive assessments are essential tools used to identify Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), a group of neurodevelopmental conditions that affect the ability to acquire and apply academic skills. These assessments help uncover difficulties in learning, even in individuals with average to above-average intelligence who have received adequate instruction. By evaluating cognitive functioning, these assessments provide valuable insights into the specific areas where support is needed to enhance academic performance.

By providing a clear understanding of an individual’s cognitive profile, these assessments can also inform decisions regarding accommodations and support services, ensuring that each person receives the necessary tools to succeed academically and beyond.

Types of Assessments

We offer a variety of assessments to help understand children’s learning, behavioural, and cognitive needs. These assessments provide insights to guide effective intervention strategies for both academic and personal development.

Cognitive Assessments

Cognitive Assessment is broad evaluation of various cognitive functions, including memory, attention, executive functioning, problem-solving, language abilities, visuospatial skills, and more.

Intellectual Assessments

An IQ (Intelligence Quotient) assessment is a specific type of cognitive assessment that focuses primarily on measuring general intellectual capacity relative to their age group.

Types of Specific Learning Disorder (SLD)

Three common types of Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) involve challenges with reading, writing, and mathematics.

Dyslexia

Dyslexia is a common Specific Learning Disorder that affects reading, making word recognition and decoding difficult, which can hinder fluency and comprehension. Despite these challenges, dyslexia is unrelated to intelligence, and many individuals excel in areas like problem-solving or creative thinking.

Dyscalculia

Another form of Specific Learning Disorder is dyscalculia, which involves challenges with mathematical concepts and operations. Individuals with dyscalculia may find it difficult to understand mathematical symbols, memorise math facts, and solve mathematical problems.

Dysgraphia

Dysgraphia is another type of Specific Learning Disorder that impacts writing skills. Individuals with dysgraphia may face challenges with handwriting, spelling, and organising their thoughts on paper. Despite these difficulties, they often possess normal or above-average intelligence.

Our Assessment Process

1

Appointment 1

Developmental history is gathered through an online form we provide, which guides the assessment process. Our assessors also review recent school reports, including NAPLAN, Individual Plans, and work samples, to determine the most appropriate assessment structure and timing.
2

Appointment 2

A comprehensive cognitive assessment identifies the client’s strengths and weaknesses, along with evaluations in reading, written expression, mathematics achievement, sustained attention, and phonological processing.
3

Appointment 3

A comprehensive report will be provided 3-4 weeks after the assessment, including recommendations for school support and any referring specialists. The report will detail applicable accommodations and recommendations for timed assessments (NAPLAN, OLNA, ATAR, University exams). An online telehealth feedback session is also included to explain the results and recommendations.
