What is the WISC cognitive assessment?
The WISC (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fifth Edition) is a comprehensive assessment for school‑aged children (6–16 years). It evaluates a range of thinking and learning abilities like verbal comprehension, reasoning, working memory and processing speed to understand overall intellectual functioning. It will provide an understanding of a child’s cognitive strengths and areas of difficulties.
Rather than simply giving a single “IQ score,” the WISC assessment produces a profile of scores across several cognitive areas so clinicians can understand how a child learns, processes information, solves problems and approaches new tasks. These insights guide educational planning, conversations with teachers, and decisions about any additional support a child might need.
When to consider a WISC assessment for your child:
A WISC assessment may be recommended by your GP, allied health practitioner, or your child’s school when there are questions about how your child thinks, learns or processes information. It can provide valuable insights into your child’s cognitive strengths and challenges, to help provide recommendations for educational support and planning. Persistently struggles at school despite effort
If your child consistently struggles with tasks at school or finds learning more difficult than their peers, especially when they seem capable in other settings, a WISC assessment can highlight underlying cognitive factors that could be affecting their learning
Has significant difficulties with memory, attention or processing speed
When a child has ongoing challenges holding information in mind, working quickly through tasks, or following multi‑step instructions, a WISC test can identify whether challenges with working memory or processing speed are contributing to their difficulties. Understanding these patterns gives parents and educators useful information for creating learning plans that respect how the child thinks and learns
Shows unusual peaks or uneven performance
Some children show great skills in one area but struggle in others (for example, strong vocabulary but slower processing or weaker working memory). How psychologists perform the WISC assessment
The WISC assessment is completed by a Psychologist in a quiet room. The assessment requires the child to work through a range of tasks and activities that are designed to measure different areas of cognitive functioning, including memory, language, reasoning, processing speed and visual-spatial skills. The activities will match the child’s age and ability level, providing regular breaks as needed to help them stay focused.
Following the assessment, the psychologist carefully scores and interprets the results, taking into consideration the child’s performance, their developmental expectations and relevant background information. The findings are then compiled into a comprehensive report, explaining your child’s cognitive abilities in simple and practical terms, including recommendations on how to further support their learning, school planning and any further assessments if necessary

Does the WISC test for Autism?

A diagnosis of Autism involves a broader assessment of social communication, behaviour and developmental history and usually requires different developmental tools and clinical observation, such as the ADOS
Types of ADHD
ADHD is commonly categorised into three types, each presenting with its own unique characteristics, which can be identified through our ADHD assessment.
Predominantly Inattentive Presentation
Some children may find it hard to share play and attention with others, make eye contact consistently, respond to their name, use gestures like waving or pointing, or join in back‑and‑forth play.
Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation
This may present as frequent impulsivity, restlessness, fidgeting, interrupting others, or talking excessively.
Combined Presentation
This is recognisable through a combination of symptoms, including hyperactivity, inattention, and impulsivity.
